The Challenge

A leading automotive services provider with over 2,000 locations in the United States faced the challenge of relying on software that had reached end of life in early 2020. Not upgrading from Windows 7 would leave the company open to numerous security vulnerabilities and on running outdated and incompatible software.

In short, the company had several thousand desktop and laptop computers, spread across multiple sites, which needed upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10.

The company had been using another third-party to complete these upgrades. After several failed attempts, management agreed to allow Solugenix to solve the problem.

The Goal:

Replacing legacy software presents an immense strategic challenge because it often touches nearly every aspect of a business.

To make sure the deployment happened with zero impact on the customer’s ability to work, careful planning was required. The following steps were performed:

  • Audited all existing PCs
  • Checks made on existing hardware for Windows 10 compatibility
  • Planned, staged rollout to minimize disruption, and enable quick failback in case of errors

Our Solution

To manage this change, we established a project team consisting of key stakeholders, including a technical architect. This approach ensured that each stakeholder helped guide the overall project through the discovery, change, verification and user education processes.

Solugenix project team members used Microsoft Deployment Toolkit and PowerShell, a cross-platform task automation and configuration management framework from Microsoft, consisting of a command-line shell and associated scripting language to automate the deployment of Windows 10 to thousands of store computers across 2,000 stores.

The project also included:

  • Close daily communication and collaboration with the client’s internal team of system experts to fully understand the complexities of the project and provide solutions
  • Full analysis of the existing legacy system to determine the functional business requirements, system architecture
  • Developing project management and risk analysis
  • Continued maintenance and support

The Results

Following this project, the automotive services provider now has a fully up-to-date and future-proof Windows 10 desktop estate. By standardizing the desktop builds and centrally managing ongoing updates and patches, we have reduced the management and maintenance overhead that was previously required to keep everything secure and up to date. As the information systems are now secure, there is also a reduction in security risk to at the store level.
